How to turn a drawing into a cut file

  1. Take a good photo

    Daylight, no shadow of your phone, held straight above the paper. Crop it to the drawing.

  2. Check the layers

    Each crayon or marker color becomes a layer. Untick any layer you don’t want, such as a grey one from paper shadows.

  3. Size it and download

    Type the width you want. For a T-shirt, 8 to 10 inches is a common size.

Tips for children’s art

  • Crayon texture leaves little white specks inside colored areas. Raise Remove tiny pieces to fill them in.
  • Paper shows up as a layer? Raise Background tolerance until it disappears.
  • Too many layers? Lower Number of colors. Similar shades merge, so there are fewer sheets to cut.
  • Pencil or pen sketches: switch to One color and turn on Uneven lighting for a single clean shape.
  • Iron-on vinyl (HTV): remember to mirror the design in Design Space before cutting.

Questions

Which drawings work best?

Bold crayon, marker or paint drawings with clear colors. Very light pencil and soft watercolor washes are harder to trace.

Can I engrave a drawing with a laser?

Yes. Switch to One color, turn on Uneven lighting, and set the width in millimetres. Choose Filled shapes to engrave the lines.

How do I keep only part of the drawing?

Untick the layers you don’t need, or crop the photo before uploading. For a person or pet in a photo, Cut out the subject with AI works too.
