How to make a layered SVG

  1. Upload a picture with flat colors

Logos, clip art, cartoons and lettering work best. Gradients and shadows turn into bands of color.

  2. Choose how many colors

Set Number of colors to the vinyl colors you want to use, or leave it on Auto. Most projects look good with two to five.

  3. Set the size and download

Type the width in inches. The SVG opens at that size, with each layer in its own color.

Getting clean layers

  • Fewer colors, less work. Every color is another layer to weed and line up.
  • Raise Remove tiny pieces if you see confetti-like specks that would be painful to weed.
  • Stacked for forgiving alignment. The bottom layer runs under the others, so small gaps don’t show.
  • Change a layer’s color with its swatch if you don’t have that vinyl. The shapes stay the same.

In Cricut Design Space

  1. Click Upload, then Upload Image, and choose the SVG.
  2. Select it and click Add to Canvas.
  3. Each color goes on its own mat, so every layer cuts from its own vinyl.

Layering the vinyl

  1. Cut and weed each layer.
  2. Apply the bottom layer (Layer 1) first.
  3. Add the other layers in order, lining them up by eye or with registration marks.

Questions

Stacked or cutout?

Stacked makes the bottom layer a full silhouette and puts the other colors on top, which hides small alignment gaps. Cutout makes pieces that fit together like a puzzle, which uses less vinyl and keeps thick layers flat.

How many colors can I use?

Up to 12 in Layered vinyl. Auto picks the main colors for you and ignores blurry edges between them.

Why is one layer just a few small pieces?

That color only appears in a few places, like a highlight or eyes. Untick its Show box to leave it out, or lower the number of colors to merge it into a neighbour.

Why remove the background?

Without it, the cutter would cut a rectangle around your design. “Also inside shapes” removes the background color that shows through letters like O and A, so those become holes.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up and no watermark.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs on your own device inside this page, so your picture never leaves your browser.

Does it work with Silhouette Studio?

Silhouette Studio opens SVG files in Designer Edition and above. The basic edition can’t open SVG.

Can I convert any picture?

Only convert images you made or have permission to use, especially if you sell what you make.
